Dr K Jayalekshmy
Dr K Jayalekshmy is the Grand daughter of Gayaka Shikhamani Harikeshanalloor Dr L Muthaiah Bhagavathar (Founder and First Principal of Swathi Thirunal Music College, Thiruvananthapuram) and 2nd daughter of Sangeetha Rathna Nellai Sri T V Krishnamoorthy (Retd Principal Swati Thirunal College).
She holds a doctorate in Music from Kerala University. She retired as the HOD Dept of Music from Maharaja’s College, Ernakulam in 2009 after being in service for 30 yrs. Post her retirement she completed a Major project under U G C on “Women Artists of South India”.
She is the only lady artist in Kerala conducting musical discourses (E.g. Nandanar Charithram). She has performed in various TV and radio channels. She has composed more than 125 compositions which includes tamil krithis, gazhals, devotional albums, poems and folk songs. She has a prominent presence in YouTube, through her channel “Gurupriya Jayalakshmi”.
Students pursuing master’s degree, PhD and M Phil in music, seek her advice and get relevant references as well as collect rare musical compositions with notation from her.
She continues to teach students of all ages, those in the beginning stage as well as advanced students, both in vocal and veena. Now she is conducting classes for groups Chamundeswari Ashtothara Krithis, Shivashtothara Krithis, Pancha raga malika, Vaara keerthanas, Daruvarnas, Popularizing and Teaching of rare compositions of Sree Swathithirunal Maharaja, Sree Muthaiah Bhagavathar, Sree G N Balasubramanyam, Sree Ambujam Krishna, Sree Papanasam sivan and others.
